LIVE ACTION 11
September 6-10, 2016

A

Carlos Martiel is an emergent artist but has already realized an impressive œuvre, like Asentamiento which covers this editions poster of Live Action. Socially engaged with a direct yet conceptual stance, his work is usually very simple in its appearance. Carrying with it a subject matter and an execution that fuses into pure poetry. It is difficult not to be convinced by his imagery which to a high degree is not only innovative and compelling but consistent. Martiel’s creative palette is vast, with a choice of objects and materials that is never repeated and goes beyond tradition and praxis. If we can state that his work stands out today in performance art, it is because of a fusion of a conceptually profound and aesthetic imagery, executed with an apparent simplicity. A simplicity that we know is very difficult to achieve. His compelling images never stops to astound, and we can only wait and see what he will do for Live Action.

Denniston Hill is pleased to present the new performance “Mule” by Carlos Martiel on June 25th.

A

Performance: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Reception: 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

A

This durational performance – developed at Denniston Hill- alludes to modern day slavery and labor exploitation, particularly as it affects immigrants from Latin America working in the United States’ agricultural sector.

A

Martiel’s 8-hour performance brings attention to increasing injustice and abuse against undocumented farm workers.

A

Reports of injustice and abuse against farm workers abound including those of opportunistic crew leaders, substandard housing, violence against farm workers by community members of the dominant culture, exclusion from labor laws, inadequate housing, pesticide violations, and long hours.

A

Out of fear of displacement and deportation, farm workers often remain unable to protest inadequate conditions or report employer’s violation of labor, health or safety laws to state authorities. This lack of legal status sets the stage for farm workers’ lack of voice, agency and advocacy – in essence it creates their invisibility.
