Cuban-born, Brooklyn-based artist Carlos Martiel (b. 1989) concludes his year-long, Visiting Artist Lecture-Project (VAL-P) residency at the University of Maryland Art Gallery with a survey of his work from the past ten years titled Carlos Martiel: Línea de Tiempo (Timeline). It also includes a newly commissioned performance by the Gallery titled Muerte al Olvido (Death to Oblivion). Known primarily for the use of his nude body as a primary substrate and focal point, Martiel’s work casts a light on to historical tensions, social barriers, and cultural traditions that are often used to define marginalized or underrepresented peoples around the world.

Carlos Martiel: Línea de Tiempo is curated by Patricia Ortega-Miranda, Department of Art History & Archaeology doctoral student and Curatorial Assistant, and Taras W. Matla, Associate Director of the University of Maryland Art Gallery. This exhibition and the performance of Muerte al Olvido is made possible, in part, by a generous grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. Additional support is provided by the Dorothy and Nicholas Orem Exhibition Fund. Funding for the forthcoming exhibition catalog is provided, in part, by the Armand-Paul Family Collection.
