Carlos Martiel uses his body as a medium to express the lived experience of black immigrants. Born in Cuba, Martiel uses his personal experience to address the treatment of Black Latinx communities in the Americas both historically and in the present. His work across the globe emphasizes the cultural and political challenges that migrants share, whether through means both chosen or forced.

Through performance, Martiel demonstrates that existence is fragile, temporal, and uncomfortable. The physical endurance of his works allows Martiel to embody and make tangible trauma, alienation, and invisibility. Caught between the ephemerality of his performance and the often difficult nature of engaging as an observer, his actions provoke a visceral reaction, a conversation that is foundational to his practice. He evokes an identity under constant threat, demanding to be recognized.
