Alter ego
The 8th Floor, New York, USA.
Curated by Anjuli Nanda and George Bolster
This performance reflects on the construction of masculinity, how it is socially understood and the implications and effects it has over people of color. Alter ego refers to the stigma and representation of a homosexual and queer black man beyond heteronormative conceptions.
I am lying down on a pedestal with my head veiled under a silk scarf. Visitors individually choose whether to uncover it or not, in order to reveal my face covered in makeup.
