Caribes Negros: La ruta del dolor

Esta exposición consiste en una selección videográfica de obras realizadas entre los años 2007-2016, por el artista cubano Carlos Martiel. En las cuales aborda desde diversos puntos de vistas la problemática racial, en dependencia de los diferentes contextos donde estas obras fueron producidas. Además para la inauguración de la exposición, Martiel realizará un nuevo performance inspirado en la experiencia de la etnia Garífuna en Centroamérica, específicamente de Livingston (Guatemala).
La muestra Caribes Negros: la ruta de dolor, reflexiona sobre las principales problemáticas y los actuales desafíos que afronta el afrodescendiente como parte del proceso de integración postcolonial en el continente americano. Zona geográfica dominada por la supremacía blanca, en cuyos países se continúa practicando políticas racistas heredados de la colonia, que exotizan, invisibilizan, a las vez que marginan y vulnerabilizan al cuerpo negro y su cultura; así como a las poblaciones originarias de estos territorios. En esta exposición el cuerpo de Martiel, a través de las dolorosas acciones en las que se encuentra involucrado, dibuja un mapa o ruta, que dialoga sobre el rol que ha jugado el afrodescendiente en este continente desde su forzosa llegada. A la vez que explora la condición humana y sus contradicciones naturales.

Staiment
Caribes negros reflexiona sobre la situación de precariedad y aislamiento que vive la población Garífuna en la región de Centroamérica, y específicamente de Livingston (Guatemala). Etnia que actualmente vive al límite de la pobreza y en algunos casos en la pobreza absoluta. Resultado de complejos procesos de históricos, tales como desarraigo, expatriación, explotación; abusos de sus derechos que a través de siglos los ha situado en una posición desprivilegiada, en relación al resto de la población guatemalteca.

LINEAGE. Performance by Carlos Martiel
Y Gallery is pleased to present the performance “Lineage” by Carlos Martiel in its space on May 1st, 2016 at 6 pm.
This project is based on the concept of “Blue Collar” or “blue-collar worker”, term used to name individuals that are in the lower level of business hierarchy. This notion is frequently used to refer to manual workers or labourers.
In “Lineage”, Martiel takes as a departure point his personal experience as an immigrant in the United States of America to address the racial origins of the term and the way it has evolved into the present. This work is also a critic to the current system of employment selection and to those class-related prejudices existing in the society functioning system, which determine the roll of the individual in the social and work-related hierarchy according to its biological characteristics and origins.
The performance will take place on May 1st, the Worker´s Day. This is a holiday celebrated in the whole world except in the United States of America.

Over the last century, technologies, economies, societies, and political systems have been transformed, constituting a revised yet always shifting cultural landscape. In order to keep up, we constantly search for new feeling by way of the next lifestyle app, the next detox, the next transformative spirit journey to calm the nerves. Low-Grade Euphoria highlights the work of artists who respond to these shifts in the cultural landscape and suggest sensory experiences to guide us through them. It is a simultaneously frantic and subdued search for the traces of joy that enable and perpetuate social life today. With the help of performances, video, sound, and installation works, the exhibition rushes forward, toward new feelings and temporary joys, happily, in a daze.

A partir de la investigación de Carlos Martiel sobre la desaparición forzada en México, especialmente en Guadalajara, el artista conceptual originario de Cuba pero radicado en Nueva York realizará una performance que será la tercera entrega del proyecto Pensar la praxis, plástica latinoamericana y ejercicios neo-revolucionarios, que organiza el colectivo Sector Reforma.
Martiel, quién por primera vez visita el país, pero cuya obra ya se ha mostrado anteriormente, creará “un monumento vivo, con mi cuerpo que signifique la vida de miles de personas que han perdido su vida por monstruosidad y la violencia”, comentó el artista
