Carlos Martiel (b. Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban artist specializing in performance. His work focuses on specific political events and social injustices that occur both inside and outside of Cuba. Martiel’s performances reflect on the relations of power between the individual and the different contexts in which he or she operates. Through his use of acute symbolism and nearly harrowing imagery, he brings about awareness surrounding race, class, and identity. When Martiel began his artistry, drawing and jewelry-making were his mediums of choice, but drawing was the catalyst to his now performance-based practice.

Todas sus obras están increíblemente cargadas de elementos sociales y políticos: reclamos a las injusticias del gobierno, la interacción del cuerpo desnudo con el ambiente, la búsqueda de dirección y el abrazar la historia propia. La piel desnuda, la sangre, el fluir de las substancias corporales, los movimientos o la carencia de estos son elementos determinantes de su obra.

Where is the line that divides a hero from a murderer? “Ascención” questions the perception of heroism as dependent on the use of power in matters of political conflict and world peace. Martiel bases his critique on the military system, where heroism is grounded on rank and rivalry, and that vindicates authoritarianism and the sacrifice of life for the common good.

Carlos Martiel is a Cuban performance artist, whose work could be described as an aggressive comment on the ethics, history and behavior of the world.

A

His provocative and raw performances explore the nature of existence, social barriers and cultural traditions. His work is a form of disagreement against the established values, through physical expressions that remind one of rituals and ceremonial procedures. Commenting on issues such as censorship or persecution for cultural or political reasons, especially in his country, the artist sees his performances as a response to the way society and history have treated the minorities and the outsiders.

CUBAN ART AWARD FINALIST ANNOUNCED

The Farber Foundation has announced the finalists for the first international Cuban Art Awards, spotlighting a mix of artists working on the island and abroad.

A

Announced last year, the Farber Foundation Cuban Art Awards were created to recognize the achievements of Cuban contemporary artists internationally. The awards are given biennially in two categories: Cuban Artist of the Year and Young Cuban Artist of the Year (35 and under).

A

In each category, the award recognizes a contemporary artist or collaborative that has demonstrated exceptional creative power over the previous two years.

A

The 2015 awards will inaugurate the program. The five finalists for Artist of the Year were chosen from a field of close to 30 candidates, says Farber Foundation director Howard Farber, and the finalists for Young Artist of the Year were chosen from a similarly wide-ranging field.

A

For the 2015 Cuban Artist of the Year, the finalists are: Alexandre Arrechea, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Teresita Fernández, Glexis Novoa, Lázaro Saavedra.

For the 2015 Young Cuban Artist of the Year, the finalists are: Alejandro Campins, Celia y Yunior, Elizabet Cerviño, Rafael Domenech, Carlos Martiel.

Kir Royal Gallery Valencia in collaboration with UPV (Polytechnic University of Valencia) is pleased to announce the exhibition “The Third Shore” curated by Guibert Rosales, Eleonora Battiston and Ricardo Forriols. Through the artworks by 14 Cuban artists between the most representative ones, the exhibition analyzes the creative experience of the art of the island from the Eighties till nowadays.

Martiel é um homem de seu tempo a ele se dirige, porém as suas práticas artísticas vão além disso para se inserir na complexa dimensão humana e na forma como a sua arte é enunciada. Sua obra não se sujeita nem nos sujeita, mas é sempre um convite para nos reconhecermos. E se ser livre é precisamente não estar submetido ao mando de ninguém e não mandar, se ser livre é desatar todos os nós, podemos dizer que, de fato, a obra de Martiel aspira – acima de todas as coisas – à liberdade.
